Newborn photoshoot vs Baby photo shoot
Why is the window for a newborn shoot so short?
When a baby is born, they are very sluggish and sleepy. And their cartilages are still soft (part of the birthing process) and they still prefer the foetal position. All these factors make the first 10 days the most ideal for the beautiful tiny curled up and tummy poses for a newborn baby photo shoot. The 2-3 week age still works great for the wrapped type of poses. Most babies still wrap beautiful during this stage. And they are generally awake for part of the photoshoot.
The newborn window is from 5 days to 21 days, depending the poses you prefer. Curled up and tummy poses work best under 10 days. Wrapped poses can be done anytime between 5-21 days.
What is a baby photoshoot?
From around 4 weeks babies become more alert, more awake during the photoshoot and they are becoming more used to giving their little bodies a good stretch and then staying in the stretch out position. This makes wrapping and posing a bit challenging. Its from this age I prefer to switch to the lifestyle baby photo shoot.
What is a lifestyle baby photoshoot?
It’s a more relaxed photoshoot mostly focused on baby and his/her family. Mommy can change baby into 1 or maybe 2 outfit changes.
When doing this session at your home, we focus on baby’s nursery and taking beautiful intimate family photos in a bedroom or lounge area. Photos are done with mom and dad adoring baby, holding, cuddling, and absorbing baby. Some individual photos of baby with some stretches and yawns. And if there are siblings, some fun sibling photos. These are always important!
If the lifestyle baby session is done in my studio, I can prepare 2 setups (which I provide) in some of my bigger baskets. At this stage baby will be too big for the tiny beds, but I do have a few bigger baskets. These are awake shots and unposed, meaning not wrapped as baby is alert and they tend to kick themselves out of the wraps before I can take the first photo. And again, some lifestyle type of family photos with some bonding moments between parents and baby, and if there are older siblings.
Around 6 weeks babies develop what is called baby acne. Most babies, if not all, get it. When the baby acne starts, I do not take photos. Lets wait for it to clear up and then book a session around 7-8 weeks
